I. T. OLIVER AND W. A. RAWLINSON I955 the effect of the free aldehyde group. The Soret band of the oxime of the copper complex, in addition to being shifted to shorter wavelengths, is much more intense than that of the copperporphyrin a itself. The similarity of the absorption spectra of copper-porphyrin a and pyridine-haemochrome a, and their difference from the usual two-banded systems of most covalent metal-porphyrin derivatives, leads us to consider cytochrome a and cytochrome oxidase. It appears to be widely accepted that these components possess the same or closely related prosthetic groups, and Lemberg (1953) has produced good evidence that haemin a is in fact the prosthetic group common to both moieties. In general, the two-banded type of spectrum is found when the metal bonds are covalent, e.g. in oxyhaemoglobin. The ionic complexes, such as reduced haemoglobin, usually show a more diffuse absorption spectrum. Reduced cytochrome a has a visible absorption band at a wavelength (605 m,.) longer than that of copper-porphyrin a and pyridine-haemochrome a (598 and 587 mz. respectively). The absence of a strong ,-band is common to all three pigments, and is attributable to the presence of a free aldehyde group, as conversion into the oxime results in a stronger ,-band. The apoprotein of the cytochrome must be responsible for the significant difference between the position of the absorption bands of cytochrome a and pyridinehaemochrome a. SUMMARY

Serum profiles of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D and parathyroid hormone in Caspian horses during different seasons
Minerals play an essential role in the normal vital process.Calcium, phosphorus and magnesium are the most abundant minerals. Vitamin D and parathyroid hormone play a key role in regulation of their homeostasis as well. The aim of this study was to evaluate calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D and parathyroid hormone on 30 Caspian horses of Guilan Province (south of the Caspian Sea) in two...
متن کاملIsolation of a Parathyroid Polypeptide from Acetic Acid Extracts of Bovine Parathyroid Glands zx-
Thus far, three methods have been used for the extraction of the parathyroid hormone from bovine parathyroid glands (2-4). The first was that introduced by Collip in 1925 (2) in which hot dilute hydrochloric acid was the extracting agent. Further purification of such acid extracts has proven difficult, but recently the purification of parathyroid polypeptides from such extracts has been reporte...

متن کاملParathyroid Hormone-Related Peptide and Vitamin D in Phosphocalcic Metabolism for Dromedary Camel
In mammals, phosphocalcic and bone metabolisms are mainly regulated by parathyroid hormone, parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) and 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D or calcitriol. In camels, circulating levels of calcitriol are 10 times higher than those determined in other ruminants and further increase during early lactation. Calcitriol and parathyroid-related peptide stimulate intestinal abs...
متن کاملEvidence for a parathyroid hormone-dependent influence of calcium on the glomerular ultrafiltration coefficient.
Experiments were performed on 36 plasma-expanded Munich-Wistar rats to examine the effects of acute hypercalcemia on the determinants of glomerular ultrafiltration. Elevation of total plasma calcium concentration to an average value of 13.2 +/- 0.5 mg/dl, by acute infusion of calcium chloride into nonthyroparathyroidectomized (non-TPTX) rats, resulted in significant declines in single nephron a...
متن کاملIs Decline Rate of Intact Parathyroid Hormone Level a Reliable Criterion for Early Discharge of Patients after Total Thyroidectomy?
Introduction: Parathyroid dysfunction leading to symptomatic hypocalcemia is not uncommon following a total thyroidectomy and is often associated with significant patient morbidity and a prolonged hospital stay. The current study aimed at evaluating the comparative predictive role of serum calcium and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) for post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia. Materials and Methods...
